Authorities in Montgomery, Alabama, reported that at least two individuals were fatally shot and 14 others sustained injuries during a mass shooting on Saturday night.

Among the deceased was a woman, and two of the injured included children, one of whom is in critical condition, as stated by Montgomery Police Department Chief James Graboys to the Montgomery Advertiser.

The incident occurred shortly after the football match between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, both historic Black institutions located in the area, in the lively downtown tourist district.

According to Graboys, the chaotic scene was triggered by a confrontation between two groups around 11:30 p.m., leading to a rampant gunfire exchange that endangered innocent bystanders.

“This was a scenario where two parties were shooting at each other right in the midst of a crowd,” he stated, as reported by AL.com, emphasizing the shooters’ disregard for the public’s safety.

Currently, there have been no arrests in connection to the shooting, and twelve of the fourteen victims are still hospitalized.

“In total, three victims are in critical condition, while nine others have injuries that are not life-threatening,” stated MPD Lt. Tina McGriff to the Montgomery Advertiser.
