Paramount announced on Monday its ambitious plan to invest significantly in revitalizing its traditional network news division, even as audiences increasingly turn to social media for their news. In a notable move, Bari Weiss, known for her thought-provoking commentary, will step in as editor in chief of CBS News. Additionally, Paramount will acquire her outlet, The Free Press, which boasts a combined 1.5 million paid and complimentary subscribers—a fraction when compared to the audience of CBS News’ most-watched programs.

“Bari embodies the spirit of independent and principled journalism, and I believe her innovative ethos will breathe new life into CBS News,” proclaimed David Ellison, CEO of Paramount. “This initiative exemplifies Paramount’s broader strategy of enhancing content and fostering authentic connections with audiences globally.”

However, not everyone believes CBS News requires revitalization. The network is already known for some of television’s top-rated shows, such as “60 Minutes” and “CBS Sunday Morning.”

The Free Press will retain its unique brand identity and operational independence, continuing its dedication to high-quality reporting, as well as video and audio productions, alongside events for its rapidly expanding community. Concurrently, Weiss will steer the editorial direction of CBS News and explore innovative reporting methods and news delivery strategies. She will work in collaboration with CBS News President Tom Cibrowski, who reports to George Cheeks, Paramount’s Chair of TV Media.
