Rep. Elect Adelita Grijalva Still Isn’t Sworn In, And Democrats Suspect The Epstein Files Are Why

The current stalemate over Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva’s swearing-in continues as Speaker Mike Johnson keeps the House out of session. The underlying implications of this delay remain shrouded in speculation.

Several potential motives come to mind regarding Johnson’s postponement of Grijalva’s swearing-in. First, any votes aimed at resolving the ongoing government shutdown could prove razor-thin, and Johnson may wish to withhold any additional votes from the Democrats.

An alternative hypothesis, as articulated by Grijalva herself during a CNN appearance, revolves around her impending role as the 218th signatory of the discharge petition concerning the Epstein files.

In her remarks on CNN’s News Central, Grijalva expressed:

“Generally, I prefer to avoid conspiracy theories, yet I find it difficult to see a logical explanation for this. Speaker Johnson has already sworn in three other members who were elected in special circumstances—two Republicans on April 1, followed by one Democrat, Walkinshaw, recently, who was sworn in just under 24 hours after election day. Meanwhile, we’ve seen sessions canceled, including mid-September and early October. I’ve been left without direct communication from the Speaker’s office, making it unclear when I might finally take my oath.”

She further revealed that many Democrats believe the Epstein files discharge petition is at the crux of her delayed swearing-in:

“I’ve received indications that my swearing-in relates directly to the discharge petition. As a woman of color and a Chicana from Tucson, I can’t help but question whether transparency—or a lack thereof—plays a role in these delays. The Speaker has recently blocked votes that could have addressed the Epstein files, suggesting a more extensive connection.”

Johnson has a track record of delaying the admission of new Democratic members as a tactic to gain time before difficult votes—a strategy that appears in play again, whether it’s regarding the government shutdown, the Epstein files, or possibly both.

Ultimately, it appears that the climate around this situation has grown increasingly dubious. Speaker Johnson’s reluctance to swear in Grijalva reflects a broader trend of evasiveness during what many have deemed a problematic government shutdown.
