Detroit ― Will the Tigers’ home stadium be rebranded in 2026?
While it’s not guaranteed, the likelihood increases following the significant announcement on Monday, as Fifth Third Bancorp revealed its plans to acquire Comerica in a deal valued at $10.9 billion. Closing of this acquisition is anticipated early in 2026, possibly just in time for the Major League Baseball season’s Opening Day.
Established as the Detroit Savings Fund in the 1800s and now headquartered in Dallas after relocating in 2007, Comerica Bank has proudly held the naming rights to the Tigers’ venue, now known as Comerica Park, since its inauguration in 2000. This agreement was the first of its kind for the franchise.
Before Comerica Park made its debut, the bank inked a 30-year, $66 million contract with the Tigers for naming rights, which was initially set to run through 2029. In 2018, this deal was extended for an additional five years, pushing the expiration to 2034.
Ahead of the 2025 season, the Tigers enhanced the presence of Comerica’s branding within the stadium by updating the prominent “Tigers” script on the scoreboard in left field to feature Comerica’s name and added it prominently behind home plate as well.
In a joint statement provided to The News on Monday morning, representatives from Fifth Third and Comerica expressed, “Both organizations are deeply committed to the communities they serve, including Detroit. Comerica Park is an iconic venue with significant history, and we are mindful of its value to Tigers fans and to the city at large. As we proceed with the merger, our focus remains on honoring the legacies of both entities and continuing support for the communities that are essential to our customers.”
They added, “Currently, it’s premature to address any modifications to facility names, but we are dedicated to making decisions that reflect our core values and long-standing community commitments.”
Notably, Fifth Third has prior experience with naming rights in baseball; the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliated with the Tigers, play at Fifth Third Field, and the West Michigan Whitecaps, also affiliated with the Tigers, previously played at Fifth Third Ballpark, which has since been renamed LMCU Ballpark.
At this time, it’s uncertain if a name change would take effect before the commencement of the 2026 MLB season. Officials from Ilitch Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Tigers, did not provide comments on Monday.
The upcoming acquisition of Comerica Bank will elevate Fifth Third Bancorp to the position of the ninth-largest bank in the nation.
