8:04 AM PT — Mark Sanchez is now charged with a Level 5 felony battery involving serious bodily injury, which may lead to a prison sentence ranging from one to six years, as announced by Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.
Mears elaborated that following new details about the condition of the alleged victim, it became evident that a more serious charge was warranted. The revised probable cause affidavit indicated that the alleged victim sustained a “severe laceration to the side of his face, penetrating all the way through his left cheek” and that his pain level was rated 10 out of 10.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey stated that Sanchez will not receive any preferential treatment: “I don’t care who you are, what you do for a living, or where you’re from – if you come to our city and commit violence, we will take every measure necessary to hold you accountable.”
Bailey noted that considering recent events, “we are fortunate that no one has died” given that a knife was involved.
Local authorities are set to hold a press conference shortly to provide more details regarding the late-night stabbing incident involving Mark Sanchez.
The 38-year-old former NFL quarterback faces three misdemeanor charges: battery resulting in injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, after an encounter with a 69-year-old delivery driver early Saturday in downtown Indianapolis.
The driver reported he was delivering fryer oil at a hotel loading dock when Sanchez confronted him about his parking; following a heated exchange, Sanchez allegedly attempted to use pepper spray on the driver.
When that failed, the driver told police he felt threatened and stabbed Sanchez multiple times, resulting in a significant wound to Sanchez’s cheek.
Both Sanchez and the driver were treated for their injuries at a hospital, and following a review of surveillance footage from the incident, Sanchez was subsequently arrested.
To date, Sanchez has not provided his account of the events as he reportedly does not recall much from that night.
