In a move that raises eyebrows more than legal certitude, President Donald Trump has threatened to revoke comedian Rosie O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship.
In a Truth Social post dated July 12, Trump lashed out at O’Donnell, dubbing her a “threat to humanity” and entertaining the notion of stripping her citizenship. The actress, known for her sharp critiques of the president and her calls for impeachment, has, unsurprisingly, become a target for his ire.
Trump contended that O’Donnell does not act in the “best interests” of the United States and suggested that she should take residence in Ireland instead. O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland in January ahead of Trump’s anticipated second term, indicated in a TikTok video her return would only be possible “when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights” in America.
“It’s been heart-wrenching to witness the political turmoil,” she lamented, as she began the process of obtaining Irish citizenship through her ancestry.
Born in 1962 in Long Island, New York, O’Donnell’s lineage includes a father who immigrated from Ireland, granting her citizenship under the 14th Amendment’s birthright provision.
The legal framework supporting Trump’s potential action against O’Donnell remains murky at best. Despite reaching out, The Epoch Times has yet to receive a response from the White House on this provocative matter.
On January 20, Trump previously attempted to curtail birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants through an executive order; however, a federal judge swiftly blocked this initiative, which is now awaiting consideration by the Supreme Court.
The historical case of Trop v. Dulles (1958) provides a relevant backdrop here, involving a soldier’s citizenship revocation due to a court-martial conviction for desertion. The Supreme Court ruled against the government, declaring that citizenship cannot simply be rescinded at the will of those in power, a principle strongly supported by the 8th Amendment, which bars cruel and unusual punishments.
Following Trump’s latest declaration, O’Donnell took to TikTok to respond, labeling the president a “disgrace to all that our beautiful country stands for,” while vowing to “oppose him at every turn.”
The Epoch Times has also attempted to contact O’Donnell for her response but has yet to receive any feedback.
