An Alabama sheriff faces backlash following the appearance of a Halloween display on his front lawn that portrays an ICE raid, which his Cuban wife asserts was entirely her creation and intended to be humorous.

<p The eye-catching installation outside the home of Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch features three skeletons dressed in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement attire pursuing two skeletons adorned with sombreros and Mexican serapes as they attempt to escape over a fence, as depicted in social media images.

The display has generated significant outrage online after a local resident shared a picture of the sheriff’s gated residence, condemning him for “broadcasting racism in his front yard.”

“Words cannot express my disappointment in seeing our elected sheriff utilize his own front yard to mock and dehumanize a community,” neighbor Whitney Newman posted on Facebook Tuesday.

“I find it neither cute nor funny, and given his law enforcement position, it makes it even more troubling,” she added, referencing a statement from Burch on the agency’s Facebook, where he assures residents “the right to live in a safe environment, free from fear.”

“This crosses the line from being a tasteless joke to making a public statement about who deserves dignity. I wish our sheriff would embody his principles instead of showcasing racism in his front yard. Our leaders should hold themselves to higher standards.”

The ICE-themed decorations emerge during a time when federal authorities across the country, particularly in Oregon and Illinois, are clashing with anti-ICE demonstrators protesting President Trump’s stringent immigration policies.

The sheriff’s office reportedly chose not to comment on Burch’s Halloween décor, directing inquiries to his wife, Michelle, who has taken full responsibility for the contentious display.

“Every year, I create tongue-in-cheek Halloween decorations with a current theme at our home,” Michelle stated in a comment obtained by Fox10 News.

“I enjoy decorating for Halloween and other holidays and regularly switch up these decorations. My husband is only responsible for mowing the lawn around them. This particular display was a nod to my Cuban heritage and the urgent need for changes in federal immigration policy.”

She also mentioned that her parents were legal immigrants and promised to put up a new Halloween decoration soon.

“I will create a new one shortly — there’s no shortage of topics to explore.”
