Ethel Kennedy: The Woman Who Took Secrets to the Grave
Ethel Kennedy, the wife of politician Robert F. Kennedy, was a woman with many secrets that she took to the grave. Despite knowing about her husband’s affair with Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe, Ethel remained by his side for the sake of their 11 children.
According to Kennedy’s friend, Jeanne Carmen, Ethel was well aware of the impact Monroe had on both President John F. Kennedy and her husband, Robert Kennedy. While John saw Monroe as just another fling, Robert had genuine feelings for the actress. Monroe, on the other hand, was obsessed with becoming First Lady and believed she had a shot with both Kennedy brothers.
However, their romance quickly fizzled out when Robert discovered that Monroe was keeping a diary of their interactions. Enraged, he demanded that she get rid of the diary, showing his more serious side.
Despite the affair ending, Monroe continued to reach out to Robert, prompting Ethel to intervene. Monroe, feeling confused and hurt, threatened to hold a press conference to expose her affairs with both Kennedy brothers. This led Robert to confront Monroe face-to-face, demanding that she leave them alone.
Actor Peter Lanford recalled a meeting between Robert and Monroe, where the actress once again threatened to reveal everything. This made Robert livid, leading him to cut off all contact with her.
Ethel Kennedy was known for her strong personality, ruling her family with an iron fist. She remained isolated in her later years, never remarrying after Robert’s death. Despite her unsavory behavior, she stood by her husband and children until her death at the age of 96.
President Joe Biden paid tribute to Ethel Kennedy, calling her an “American hero” and “an emblem of resilience and service” following her passing. Ethel’s legacy as a strong and loyal woman will always be remembered.
