Dear I.U.V.T.,

This is a tough situation to be in, but it’s not uncommon in schools. It’s unfortunate that some teachers feel the need to form cliques and exert influence over decisions that affect the entire school community. It’s clear that your principal values the opinion of this influential teacher clique, but that doesn’t mean you can’t advocate for what you believe is best for the school.

One way to fight back against the clique is to gather support from other staff members who feel the same way you do. Talk to your colleagues about your concerns and see if you can form a united front to present your case to the administration. It’s important to approach this in a respectful and professional manner, focusing on the reasons why you believe the school carnival is the better option for fundraising.

You could also try to schedule a meeting with your principal to discuss your concerns. Present the results of the Google Form and explain why you believe the school carnival is a more inclusive and community-building event compared to using a third-party fundraising company. It’s possible that your principal may not have realized the level of support for the school carnival and may be open to reconsidering the decision.

If all else fails, you may have to accept the decision for this year and focus on making the best of the situation. You can still participate in the fundraising efforts and support the school in other ways, while also advocating for a different approach in future years.

Remember, change in schools often takes time and persistence. Keep advocating for what you believe is best for your school community and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Your voice and perspective are important, and it’s worth fighting for what you believe in.

Best of luck in navigating this challenging situation!

Mean Girls Revisited: Debriefing the Bonkers Fundraiser

Dear I.U.V.T.M.G.,

It’s time for a post-event debrief. Let’s start by crunching some numbers. How much money did the latest fundraiser bring in compared to previous school carnivals? Let’s get a breakdown of the total funds raised, excluding the third party’s cut. It’s essential to evaluate the success of the new fundraiser and compare it to the tried-and-true carnival tradition. Plus, let’s hear from the staff about their experiences coordinating the event.

The decision to go with the clique’s new fundraiser idea, despite staff reservations, has raised some eyebrows. The real concern here is whether the new fundraiser will bring in less money and potentially replace a beloved tradition. While it may not be a crime, it could be a real headache for everyone involved.

As for me, I say let the carnival-deprived parents take the lead on this one. It’s not a battle worth fighting for the faculty.

Feeling Like a Minus One: The Wedding Invite Dilemma

Dear We Are Teachers,

After nine years of teaching 7th grade at my current school, I was surprised to not receive an invitation to a coworker’s wedding. I had helped organize a bridal shower for her and assumed the wedding was small, hence the lack of invite. However, I recently discovered through Instagram that the wedding was a grand affair, with our entire department and many other teachers from the school in attendance. I feel hurt and left out. Should I confront my coworker about being the only one excluded from her wedding?
