“Street photography is not just an art form; it’s a lifestyle,” Jamel Shabazz remarks, a philosophy he has consistently demonstrated over the last fifty years. The iconic photographer is celebrated for capturing the essence of style, culture, and the sociopolitical climate of his beloved Brooklyn since the 1980s, with his work now featured in a new publication from Prestel.

Prospect Park: Photographs of a Brooklyn Oasis, 1980 to 2025 showcases 120 vibrant color and monochrome photos taken throughout this urban sanctuary. Spanning 585 acres, the public park provides ample opportunities for socializing, exercising, and connecting with nature, serving as a refuge for Shabazz amidst the challenges of daily life.

Shabazz began this photographic journey after returning to New York from a 36-month stint in the U.S. Army, coinciding with his work at Riker’s Island, the infamous correctional facility. For him, Prospect Park was a haven of joy and camaraderie, providing a temporary reprieve from grim realities.

The book features numerous portraits that highlight Shabazz’s enduring presence in the park. With warm, genuine smiles and confident postures, his subjects reflect a community that evolves yet remains rooted in familiar joys. The images offer a glimpse into how essential the park has been through the decades, showcasing generations climbing trees, gathering by lakes, or simply cherishing moments together.
