Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement might soon face accountability following an incident caught on camera showing an agent shooting a reverend in the head with a pepper ball during an ICE demonstration. However, federal authorities assert that the video does not capture the complete scenario.
The tense encounter between federal agents and protesters occurred at an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Illinois on September 19, but the footage has only recently gained attention.
The video shows Reverend David Black on the sidewalk, reaching out to three agents in tactical gear positioned on the roof. The agents commenced firing pepper balls into the crowd during the protest â one of several rallies in recent weeks against the detention and deportation of undocumented individuals.
In a statement to TMZ, Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs for DHS, argued that the brief video does not depict the protesters obstructing an ICE vehicle, impeding its movement. According to her, law enforcement had given multiple orders for the protesters to clear federal property, warning them of potential force if they failed to comply.
McLaughlin mentioned that shortly after the confrontation, “rioters began to throw rocks, bottles, and shoot fireworks at law enforcement officials on the roof.” She added that Reverend Black “gestured provocatively at Secretary Kristi Noem and our team during our previous visit last week.”
Reverend Black later addressed the event in an interview with Religion News Service, explaining, âI urged them toward repentance. I extended an invitation for them to experience salvation, to join the forthcoming kingdom.â Black also remarked that after being struck, âWe could hear laughter emanating from them.â
The ACLU has initiated a lawsuit concerning this and other occurrences at the Broadview facility.
