Donald Trump and a businessman sit at a conference table, surrounded by U.S. flags and official decor, discussing important matters.

The military recruitment landscape saw considerable distress during the Biden administration, a challenge so monumental that by Spring 2024, both the U.S. Army and Air Force urgently called on retirees to return to service.

Challenges to recruitment were exacerbated by COVID-19 vaccine mandates and a growing emphasis on progressive values within the armed forces. Reports indicated that the military was increasingly perceived as overly progressive, where issues such as the treatment of transgender soldiers and traditional values created a divisive atmosphere. Furthermore, the military’s culture reflected itself in public events, such as drag shows at bases and the hiring of leaders known for controversial statements.

In testimony to the House Armed Services Committee, Ashish Vazirani, the acting undersecretary for personnel and readiness, stated the obvious: in 2023, recruitment goals were missed by a staggering 41,000 individuals.

Fast forward to the present: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently delivered a brighter outlook to President Trump during a Cabinet meeting. “Mr. President, we’ve shattered recruitment records in 2025, and the first two weeks of 2026 have already far exceeded expectations,” he declared enthusiastically. “In fact, the Marine Corps has met its annual reenlistment goal in just two weeks.”

It’s hard to argue against the palpable excitement stemming from leadership like Trump’s. “There’s no measure of enthusiasm that rivals the effect of your leadership, sir,” Hegseth noted.

In a shared moment of positivity, Secretary Hegseth tweeted:

@SecWar announces RECORD military recruitment numbers for FY 2026:

“We saw record recruitment in 2025, Mr. President. The first 2 weeks of 2026 already blow it out of the water. In fact, reenlistment has already met its year-long goal in the Marine Corps in 2026—in just 2 weeks.” pic.twitter.com/KrzNP3xzi7

The previous administration was frequently criticized for prioritizing a progressive agenda over military readiness. In stark contrast, President Trump’s initial actions upon reclaiming the White House in January were aimed at dismantling the military’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) focus in favor of reinforcing its core mission.

As previously reported by The Gateway Pundit, Trump wasted no time introducing executive orders designed to eliminate leftist ideologies from military practices while emphasizing combat readiness. These included the Restoring America’s Fighting Force and the Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness orders.

In September, Secretary Hegseth convened America’s top military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, where he passionately rallied them to restore a “warfighting ethos” and strive for military excellence.
