John Corbett, like many fans, was cheering for Aidan and Carrie to find happiness together in And Just Like That.
“When Michael Patrick King and I began discussing my return, my first question was, ‘What’s going to happen?’” Corbett, who is now 64, told Us Weekly while promoting his latest film Soul on Fire earlier this month. “Only a few people, including some writers and Sarah Jessica Parker, were aware it might not end well.”
Corbett portrayed Carrie’s love interest, Aidan Shaw, in Sex and the City for two seasons. Their relationship, which began in a charming fashion, was tumultuous and ended after an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth) in season three.
In the following season, lacking a relationship, Carrie sends Aidan an email to reconnect. They reignite their romance, leading to Aidan’s proposal. Though Carrie initially agrees, her doubts about marriage resurface, compounded by Aidan’s lingering trust issues from her past. Their engagement wraps up at the end of season four.
In the Sex and the City films, viewers learned that Aidan found happiness with a woman named Kathy and they have a son together, while Carrie ultimately returned to Big.
However, in the newer series, And Just Like That, Big’s character dies in the first episode. Corbett reprised his role in subsequent seasons, and viewers were hopeful for a potential rekindling with Carrie now that Aidan was single.

Aidan and Carrie had a dinner date, but Aidan’s life in Virginia created distance between them, ultimately leading to their split. Despite the outcome, Corbett expressed his joy at being part of the “Sex and the City family” over the past two decades.
“I appreciate every individual involved, from those in front of the camera to those preparing our meals,” he shared with Us. “It’s truly a close-knit community.”
Reconnecting with his old surroundings for And Just Like That stirred feelings of nostalgia in Corbett.

Corbett fondly remembered his time in New York, particularly staying in his old apartment near Lincoln Center during the filming.
As Corbett wrapped up his role, news emerged that And Just Like That would conclude after three seasons, leaving fans in suspense about Aidan and Carrie’s future.
“When Aidan and Carrie shared their last scene together, I was home watching, unaware of the upcoming two or three episodes,” he shared. “By the time the finale aired, the show’s cancellation was announced.”
Corbett expressed his sorrow over the conclusion of the HBO Max series, wishing it could continue.
“I genuinely appreciate the entire cast and crew, wishing to see more of them for years to come,” he expressed. “Sadly, it seems the story is at an end, as is often the case with Sex and the City/And Just Like That.”
Corbett shared his hope for the series to possibly return, emphasizing how fond he is of the cast and storyline.
“I would love nothing more than to continue watching; they truly are my favorite family from any project I’ve ever been a part of,” he enthused.
