The High Cost of Hiring DEI Leaders: A Cautionary Tale

Nearly a year ago, the saga of the HMNZS Manawanui unfolded dramatically after the vessel sank off the Samoan coast, becoming a nationwide controversy in New Zealand.

As one of only nine vessels in New Zealand’s navy, the Manawanui met its untimely demise after hitting a reef, initiating a complex web of blame and online trolling directed particularly at its commander.

The ship’s captain, Yvonne Gray, faced a torrent of online abuse for the incident, prompting an emphatic defense from Judith Collins, New Zealand’s female defense minister, who decried the “vile and misogynistic remarks” from what she described as “armchair admirals”.

However, an official inquiry later revealed that Gray’s crew had mistakenly left the ship on autopilot during the fatal maneuver, a misstep that hardly strengthens the argument for impunity in leadership roles.

In a move that underscores the complexities of political accountability, the New Zealand government agreed to pay Samoa 10 million Samoan Tala (approximately $3.5 million) after the vessel’s sinking caused significant environmental damage, including oil spills that affected local wildlife and beaches.

According to a report by BBC, the Manawanui began leaking oil following the incident, which resulted in the unfortunate deaths of sea turtles along with pollution visible on nearby Samoan beaches.

Winston Peters, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, clarified that the compensation was made at the request of Samoan authorities, further complicating the narrative surrounding the sinking.

Interestingly, the Manawanui is notable as New Zealand’s first naval loss at sea since World War II, a shocking milestone for a nation with a relatively modest naval presence. It was engaged in surveying underdeveloped seabed areas when it met its fate.

The 75 crew members aboard were rescued just in time as the vessel began to list perilously off the southern coast of Upolu.

LESBIAN CAPTAIN LOSES SHIP!

The Royal NZ Navy ship, HMNZS Manawanui, sank after running aground on a reef near Upolu, Samoa, and subsequently catching fire. A loss of $100 million, just like that.
