WASHINGTON — Former President Joe Biden is currently undergoing radiation and hormone therapy as he embarks on a new phase in the treatment of his aggressive prostate cancer, diagnosed after his presidency, as confirmed by a spokesperson on Saturday.

Kelly Scully, an aide to Biden, stated, “In line with his treatment regimen for prostate cancer, President Biden is receiving both radiation and hormone therapy.”

Now 82 years old, the Democrat left the White House in January after having abandoned his reelection campaign six months earlier, following a challenging debate against Republican Donald Trump that raised concerns regarding Biden’s age, health, and cognitive abilities. Trump went on to defeat the Democrat candidate Kamala Harris, who had served as Biden’s vice president.

In May, Biden’s former presidential office disclosed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which had already metastasized to his bones. This diagnosis followed reports of urinary symptoms.

Prostate cancer is categorized by a grading system called the Gleason score. The scores range from 6 to 10, where scores of 8, 9, and 10 indicate more aggressive cancer. Biden’s office has stated that his Gleason score is 9, suggesting a particularly aggressive form of the disease.

Just last month, Biden underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead.
