A man was violently attacked with a blade, suffering a facial laceration, just outside a subway station in Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the Monday morning rush hour, as reported by police amid rising violent incidents within the city’s transit system.

The incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. when the 27-year-old man exited the East Broadway E and F train station. He was approached without provocation on Canal Street near Essex Street, according to police.

The assailant slashed the victim across the face while he was waiting to cross the street, then fled the scene, law enforcement officials stated.

Emergency responders transported the victim to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Medical sources mentioned the victim required eight stitches to repair the wound.

As of several hours post-incident, the attacker remained at large.

This unprovoked assault occurred just two days after a disturbing incident at a Midtown subway platform, where two men were assaulted, one being pushed onto the tracks.

The victims, aged 37 and 39, were at the 57th Street F train station late Saturday night when they noticed the assailants donning hoodies and face masks, according to law enforcement and internal sources.

When the victims began to record the suspects, the duo became agitated and confronted them, leading to the 39-year-old being slashed on the hand while the other was shoved onto the tracks.

The 37-year-old managed to return to the platform unaided, albeit with an elbow injury, as per the reports.

The assailants reacted violently upon realizing they were being recorded, according to sources. NYPD

Both individuals were subsequently taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where they are in stable condition.

The suspects, captured in surveillance footage, are believed to be Hispanic men in their twenties. One was seen wearing a black hoodie and mask paired with a purple coat, while the other donned a gray hoodie and orange coat.

Earlier that day, a 37-year-old woman was assaulted when she attempted to intervene as a man groped her in a Lower Manhattan subway station, police stated.

The woman encountered the assailant at the Canal Street A train station around 2 p.m. when he inappropriately touched her, prompting her to push him away. In retaliation, he punched her in the mouth before fleeing the scene.

The NYPD has made the suspect’s appearance public, with images showing him last seen in a black jacket, black sweatshirt, a white T-shirt, black pants, and black and white sneakers.

The woman declined medical assistance at the scene.

These latest incidents follow the fatal, unprovoked attack on Italian immigrant Nicola Tanzi, 64, who was assaulted inside the Jay Street-MetroTech station in downtown Brooklyn last Tuesday night.

The accused, David Mazariegos, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail at Rikers Island.

So far this year, felony assaults within the city’s transit system have seen a small increase, with 453 reported incidents compared to 445 during the same period in 2024, as stated by the latest NYPD data released Sunday.

Conversely, there have been four murders recorded this year, in contrast to eight investigated in the same timeframe last year.

Despite these rising assault numbers, overall felony crimes on the transit system have decreased by approximately 4%, with 1,639 incidents reported compared to 1,706 last year at this time.
