We are excited to invite Hyperallergic Members to a special virtual chat on November 5, 2025. This engaging discussion will feature celebrated poet, critic, and curator John Yau sitting down with renowned artist Sean Scully. They will delve into Scully’s extensive career, explore his recent works, and share insights for aspiring artists. Check out Yau’s review of Scully’s creations.

The conversation, led by moderator Hrag Vartanian, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, from 2 PM to 3 PM (ET), with a Q&A session for members to follow.

John Yau is a distinguished poet, critic, curator, and founder of Black Square Editions, with a body of work that includes over 50 books spanning poetry, fiction, and art criticism, plus notable monographs on artists like Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and A. R. Penck.

In recognition of his achievements, Yau was awarded the Jackson Poetry Prize in 2018, the Rabkin Prize in 2021, and the American Book Award in 2024 for his essay collection Please Wait by the Coatroom: Reflections on Race and Identity in American Art. His latest poetry anthology, Diary of Small Discontents; New and Selected Poems 1974–2024, was released recently.

He is a Professor Emeritus at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and has been a long-standing contributor to Hyperallergic.


Sean Scully RA, born June 30, 1945, is a talented artist originally from Ireland and currently based in America. He has made significant contributions to painting, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. Since moving from London to New York in 1975, Scully has transformed the landscape of abstraction from Minimalism towards a more emotive approach, reconnecting with metaphor and spirituality in artistic expression.

Recently, notable exhibitions in New York include the retrospective Sean Scully: The Albee Barn. Montauk at The Parrish Art Museum from May 11 to September 21, 2025, and Sean Scully: Broadway Shuffle, showcasing seven outdoor sculptures along Broadway from July 12, 2024, to March 31, 2025.

Further international retrospectives scheduled for this year comprise Sean Scully. Stories at Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburg, Germany (June 27 – November 2, 2025), Sean Scully: Sublime and Sunyata at Art Museum of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Sichuan, China (June 12 – October 12, 2025), and Sean Scully: The Horizontal and The Vertical at Daegu Art Museum, South Korea (March 18 – August 17, 2025). In addition, Sean Scully will be featured at Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, Casa Milà, Barcelona, Spain (March 14 – July 6, 2025). In 2024, he experienced a major exhibition with Sean Scully: A Romantic Geometry of Colors at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, from October 14, 2024, to February 24, 2025.

A new solo exhibition titled Sean Scully: Tower is set to debut at Lisson Gallery this November 2025, following the success of the previous year’s Sean Scully: Duane Street 1981-1983 exhibition.
