The latest episode of “The Penguin” on HBO and streaming on Max has left viewers shocked and in awe of Cristin Milioti’s stunning performance as the unhinged mobster Sofia Falcone. In this fourth episode titled “Cent’Anni,” Sofia’s character takes center stage as her dark past is revealed.

Sofia Falcone, played by Milioti, is introduced as a notorious figure just days after being released from Arkham Asylum, where she had spent a decade for serial murders known as the Hangman. The episode delves into Sofia’s backstory, revealing that her father, Carmine (Mark Strong), is the real Hangman who murdered her mother. When Sofia begins asking questions about her mother’s death, Carmine turns on her, framing her for the murders and sending her to Arkham.

Throughout the episode, Milioti skillfully portrays Sofia’s descent into madness as she is brutalized in Arkham and falsely accused of being a psychopathic killer. The episode culminates in a chilling moment where Sofia seeks revenge on her family by gassing them to death, except for her young niece and the Falcone underboss, Johnny Viti.

Milioti’s performance in this episode has been hailed as a tour-de-force, showcasing her range and depth as an actress. The actress herself describes the episode as a “full-course meal” for an actor, highlighting the intense emotional journey Sofia undergoes.

To prepare for the role, Milioti worked closely with a movement coach to understand how Sofia’s experiences in Arkham would affect her physicality. She also focused on transforming Sofia’s appearance from pre-Arkham luxury to a more wild and garish look post-Arkham, reflecting the character’s inner turmoil.

Overall, Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone in “Cent’Anni” has been met with critical acclaim, solidifying her as a powerhouse performer in the world of comic book adaptations. This immersive experience added layers to Sofia’s environment and enriched Milioti’s performance, particularly during the intense scene where Sofia snaps and commits a violent act.

While Milioti prefers to keep her acting process private, she hints at having her own interpretations of Sofia’s scars and backstory. She acknowledges the importance of staying immersed in the magic of the performance rather than dissecting the technicalities of acting, embracing the spontaneity and creativity of the craft.
