Applications are now open for the MFA in Visual Art at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). This fully-residential, two-year program embraces a wide array of creative expressions—ranging from traditional methods to innovative media and in-depth scholarly exploration.

The MFA community at WashU, a respected research institution, comprises artists and scholars dedicated to collaboration. Facilities at WashU include a digital fabrication lab, printmaking and book studio, wood and metal workshops, textile studios, and spaces designed for time-based media art. These resources foster interdisciplinary experimentation and intellectual curiosity.

The curriculum aims to equip students with a versatile understanding of contemporary art, encouraging long-term engagement with various career paths in the arts. Students have the chance to broaden their studies through the Office for Socially Engaged Practice and participate in programs such as the Counterpublic triennial fellowship and Berlin Sommerakadamie. Throughout the program, students will showcase their work in multiple exhibitions, including at the esteemed Kemper Art Museum at WashU.

The core faculty includes Tiffany Calvert (Chair, MFA in Visual Art), Jamie Adams, Heather Bennett, Lisa Bulawsky, Joe deVera, Amy Hauft, Meghan Kirkwood, Arny Nadler, Patricia Olynyk, Jack Risley, Cheryl Wassenaar, and Monika Weiss.

The Sam Fox School also invites prominent artists, designers, architects, historians, and critics from across the globe for workshops, studio sessions, and lectures. Recent guests included Mark Dion, Jess T. Dugan, Mariam Ghani, Katharina Grosse, Blas Isasi Gutierrez, Dana Levy, Catherine Opie, Sarah Oppenheimer, Gregory Volk, and others.

Graduates can apply for residencies at Paris’ Cité internationale des arts, the $25,000 Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Award, and various residencies and fellowships available for recent graduates in St. Louis. Notable alumni include Layla Ali, Jill Downen, Addoley Dzegede, Kahlil Robert Irving, Lavar Munroe, Yvonne Osei, Ebony G. Patterson, Carlie Trosclair, and Cayce Zavaglia, among many others.

Application deadline is January 10, 2026. Apply for free until December 14, 2025.
