All accepted students are awarded an identical financial package: comprehensive tuition coverage, an annual stipend, health insurance, and personal studio space.

Visitors engage with Britt Moseley’s “Leftover Landscape” installation featured in the 2025 MFA Thesis Show Acceleration Without Arrival.

The MFA in Studio Art at UT Austin offers a fully funded two-year program tailored for artists working across various disciplines. Each year, we accept 12–15 students who collaborate closely with active faculty members during weekly studio appointments while advancing their artistic practices in an intimate cohort.

All accepted students benefit from the same financial assistance package: complete tuition coverage, an annual stipend of $21,500, health insurance, and private studio space ranging between 300–800 square feet. This funding arrangement is consistent throughout both years without the need for reapplication, allowing students to concentrate on their art without financial worries.

The curriculum encompasses five disciplines – Painting + Drawing, Photography + Media, Print, Sculpture + Extended Media, and Transmedia – and is adapted to fit individual artistic practices rather than imposing a strict framework. Faculty actively exhibit their work and engage in research while prioritizing the teaching studio environment. The Visiting Artist Program and Viewpoint Series invite established artists, curators, critics, and scholars for discussions and studio visits, whereas the Guest Artist in Print Program brings contemporary printmakers for collaborative week-long residencies.

Students have access to their own studios as well as extensive communal facilities:

  • A sculpture lab featuring fabrication equipment, welders, plasma cutters, mold-making resources, and a kiln
  • Four print labs equipped for intaglio, relief, lithography, serigraphy, and a risograph room
  • A photography lab with digital and darkroom setups as well as large-format printers
  • A digital fabrication lab housing 3D/UV printers, laser and waterjet cutters, engravers, and CNC machinery
  • A Transmedia Lab equipped with VR headsets and tools for audio/video and performance creation
  • A well-stocked woodshop

The program includes funding for summer residencies at Skowhegan, SOMA Mexico City, and Ox-Bow. We invite you to our Virtual Open House on Thursday, November 6, from 6–7pm (CT) to learn more and pose questions to faculty, staff, and current graduate students.

Suggested Application Deadline: December 15, with all documents due by January 10, 2026.
