Luis Lira-Hernandez

A Venezuelan man has been sentenced to a decade in prison after he admitted to attempting to murder the mother of his children inside a laundromat in Logan Square.

Luis Lira-Hernandez, 35, entered a guilty plea for the charges of attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery in a deal that resulted in a sentence handed down by Judge Aleksandra Gillespie, according to official records.

Law enforcement identified Lira-Hernandez as the individual who stabbed and severely wounded a woman at the Bubbleland laundromat located at 2249 North Milwaukee Avenue around 6 p.m. on October 15, 2023. He was apprehended almost six months later.

A bulletin from the Chicago Police Department released shortly after the stabbing named Lira-Hernandez and noted that the victim, aged 25, was the mother of his children. The message, which was provided to CWBChicago by a source, contained images of him with a child.

The document indicated that both individuals were recently arrived Venezuelan migrants residing at O’Hare International Airport, where many migrants were temporarily housed. According to the bulletin, the woman was stabbed “numerous” times during a dispute “over domestic issues.” It also featured a photo of a weapon resembling a large-handled fillet knife.

Witnesses reported seeing Lira-Hernandez fleeing the scene and attempting to conceal himself. Despite the police establishing a perimeter and deploying a canine unit, he was able to evade capture that night.

Judge Gillespie sentenced Lira-Hernandez to ten years for attempted murder and seven additional years for aggravated domestic battery, with both sentences to be served concurrently. His parole eligibility date has yet to be determined.
