Shae Cornette is stepping into a prominent role at ESPN.

The anchor of “SportsCenter” will take over as host of “First Take,” the dynamic sports show centered on the commentary and viewpoints of Stephen A. Smith. She will succeed Molly Qerim, who has been a steady guiding presence on the program since 2015 when it aired on ESPN2. Qerim’s departure leaves big shoes to fill, as her style might have been less flashy but earned significant respect.

Cornette, who has been filling in since Qerim stepped away, will officially commence her role on Monday, November 3rd. Her last show on “SportsCenter” will be on October 25th.

“Taking on ‘First Take’ is no simple task; it demands confidence, resilience, and genuine sports knowledge — and Shae embodies all these qualities and more,” remarked Smith in a statement. “I’ve seen her manage the desk with both composure and enthusiasm, and I couldn’t be more excited to have her officially join our team.”

Changes to “First Take” often have ripple effects. The program is among ESPN’s highest-rated shows, prompting a substantial new contract with Smith that permits him to voice his opinions on political and other topics beyond Disney’s ownership.

According to David Roberts, executive vice president and executive editor of sports news and entertainment at ESPN, Cornette is “thorough in her prep work, easily connects with our high-profile hosts, and possesses a remarkable gift for keeping debates engaging and focused.” He added, “Her professionalism and energy make her an outstanding fit for ‘First Take’ and a valuable asset to one of ESPN’s leading franchises.”

Prior to her stint on “SportsCenter,” Cornette played a key role in ESPN’s college sports coverage and digital programming during major events. She previously worked for Chicago’s Fox affiliate, where she covered the Bears and hosted her own weekly sports show. Her career began with roles at Big Ten Network and ABC 7’s The Chicago Huddle. She holds a degree in broadcast journalism and kinesiology from Indiana University.

“I am excited to take on this role, and I believe I can contribute to the ongoing success of the First Take brand,” Cornette stated. “My journey at ESPN has been one of significant growth and opportunity. The energy and passion of ‘First Take’ perfectly align with my love of sports, and I can’t wait to share that enthusiasm with our audience every weekday morning.”
