Mike Johnson Is Cracking Under The Pressure To Seat Adelita Grijalva

In the realm of politics, self-inflicted wounds often leave the most lasting scars.

While the Epstein files and the potential government shutdown may appear to be unrelated issues, they stem from the same political dysfunction. One revolves around the essential task of maintaining government operations, while the other highlights a failure of Donald Trump and his allies to keep a campaign promise regarding the disclosure of files on one of the nation’s most notorious sex offenders.

Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) have put Speaker Johnson in a precarious position with their discharge petition, which seeks to compel a House vote on whether the Department of Justice should unveil the full Epstein documentation.

A discharge petition necessitates a minimum of 218 signatures to advance to the House floor for a vote.

Recently, Adelita Grijalva emerged victorious in a special election to complete the term of her late father in Arizona’s third district. Grijalva has already announced her intention to support the discharge petition, potentially becoming the crucial 218th signature required for a vote.

However, the Trump administration is actively working to thwart this discharge petition, resulting in Grijalva not being seated despite precedents that allow for the swift seating of occupants elected during non-sessions, as seen in recent congressional history.

Once the special election results were certified in Arizona, Attorney General Kris Mayes threatened legal action against Speaker Johnson if he delayed Grijalva’s seating. This prospect seems to have caught Johnson off guard, as he displayed marked agitation when questioned about his refusal to seat the Arizona Democrat.

In an interview with CNBC, Johnson exhibited moments of vulnerability when asked about Grijalva’s situation, revealing the stress points in his leadership amid these conflicts.
