Scene of Carjacking

A 19-year-old man, alongside a 13-year-old accomplice, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after committing a carjacking incident near Goose Island.

Prosecutors reported that Keondre Pitts had pending juvenile cases pertaining to carjacking when he and the 13-year-old attempted to rob a man at gunpoint on October 9, 2024.

The duo confronted their victim in the 700 block of West Division Street at approximately 2:45 a.m. and escaped in his 2024 Honda Civic, according to a report from the Illinois State Police.

Approximately 30 minutes later, the Chicago Police Department’s hijacking task force disseminated the Civic’s license plate and location details. Two state troopers quickly noticed the vehicle at a red light near Lafayette Avenue and 95th Street.

The troopers pursued the car as it sped off and entered the wrong lane on 95th Street. Shortly after, both Pitts and the 13-year-old attempted to flee on foot. The report indicated that the 13-year-old discarded a loaded 9-millimeter handgun while escaping, which was later recovered by the police.

Pitts has now entered a guilty plea for aggravated vehicular hijacking, resulting in a 10-year sentence imposed by Judge Peggy Chiampas. Under state law, he will serve half of this time, with a projected parole date set for October 5, 2029.

Updates on the two juvenile cases remain unavailable as those records are protected from public access.
