Two recent studies have shed light on the origins of Earth’s meteorites, linking most of them to a few collisions within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. These findings, published in Nature on October 16, provide valuable context for researchers in understanding how and where the building blocks of planets came together to form the solar system we know today.

Meteorites hold clues to the early history of the solar system, but their origins are often a mystery. Knowing the source asteroid of a meteorite is crucial for scientists, as it helps them piece together the puzzle of the solar system’s formation. Most meteorites on Earth are ordinary chondrites, with the H and L classes making up 70 percent of all falls.

The L chondrites are believed to have originated from a single parent asteroid that was shattered in a massive collision around 470 million years ago. Researchers used radioactively decaying elements to determine the age of these meteorites and identified the Massalia family of asteroids as the likely source. The timing of the collision that created the L chondrites aligns with the formation of the Massalia family, indicating a direct connection.

On the other hand, the H chondrites, which are 5 to 8 million years old, are believed to have originated from the Koronis and Karin asteroid families. These families were once single asteroids that were disrupted by impacts, leading to the creation of the H chondrites.

While these findings provide valuable insights into the origins of Earth’s meteorites, they also highlight the limitation of our current meteorite collection. The fact that most meteorites can be traced back to just a few asteroids suggests that we may be missing out on a vast array of information about the asteroid belt’s diversity.
