Chicago Judge Has To Tell Border Official That Kids In Halloween Costumes Are Not A Threat

An Illinois federal judge reprimanded Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol official leading the Trump administration’s immigration raids in Chicago, for the aggressive tactics used by him and his officers against civilians, even on residential streets set up for a Halloween parade. U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis instructed Bovino to report to her daily at 6 p.m. with details of the day’s incidents. Bovino, dressed in his Border Patrol uniform, appeared before Ellis and mostly listened as she outlined the restrictions already in place. He agreed to start wearing a body camera by Friday, as per Ellis’ previous directive.

The court session followed an incident where federal officials were seen deploying tear gas in Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood, causing the cancellation of a children’s Halloween parade. Ellis emphasized that tear gas should only be used after verbal warnings and when necessary for safety, not against kids in Halloween costumes. She expressed concern over videos showing confrontations between civilians and Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, particularly with Halloween approaching.

In a social media post, the Department of Homeland Security supported Bovino, stating they are committed to making America safe. Since September, numerous arrests have been made in Chicago as part of the immigration crackdown ordered by President Trump. Tensions have escalated when ICE agents show up in neighborhoods for arrests, leading to angry reactions from community members.

Bovino gained attention after a video showed him apparently throwing tear gas at protesters, violating Ellis’ guidelines. The judge warned against deploying tear gas during Halloween festivities. The hearing was part of a lawsuit filed by media organizations and protesters against federal agents’ treatment of demonstrators, accusing them of instigating violence.
