Qualcomm announces new AI chips in data center push, shares surge

Qualcomm, a leading smartphone chipmaker, recently made headlines by unveiling two new artificial intelligence chips for data centers. The announcement, which sent Qualcomm’s shares soaring by 20%, marks a significant shift for the company as it looks to diversify beyond the stagnant smartphones market.

The new chips, known as AI200 and AI250, are designed to enhance memory capacity and support AI applications, or inference. These chips are set to hit the market in 2026 and 2027, respectively, catering to the growing demand for AI infrastructure in cloud providers, chipmakers, and enterprises.

Qualcomm’s foray into AI chips comes at a time when competition in the data center market is heating up, with Nvidia leading the charge. Despite the challenges of switching chip providers and Nvidia’s superior performance, Qualcomm is optimistic about the cost-saving benefits its new chips will offer to enterprises.

In a strategic move, Qualcomm also announced a partnership with Humain, an AI startup backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Humain is set to deploy 200 megawatts of Qualcomm’s new AI racks, showcasing the company’s global reach and commitment to meeting the evolving needs of high-efficiency AI compute.

This diversification effort is part of Qualcomm’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on the smartphone market, which has been impacted by the loss of major customers like Huawei and Apple’s shift towards in-house chip development. In recent years, Qualcomm has made significant strides in the personal computer market, positioning itself as a key player in the competition against Intel and AMD.

Overall, Qualcomm’s entry into the AI chip market signals a new era of innovation and growth for the company. With a strong focus on AI technology and strategic partnerships, Qualcomm is poised to carve out a niche for itself in the data center space, catering to the increasing demand for advanced AI infrastructure.
