If Democrats Win The House, They Are Coming After Trump’s DOJ

The prospect of Democrats reclaiming the House in the upcoming November elections raises a rather tantalizing question: will there be enough accountability for the myriad controversies stemming from the Trump administration?

Central to the discourse is the ongoing narrative surrounding the alleged “weaponization” of the Department of Justice (DOJ), as articulated by conservative critics. This notion suggests that the DOJ has not merely functioned as a legal entity but has instead become an instrument of political retribution.

Despite being distinct entities, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the DOJ have collaborated closely on Trump’s controversial immigration and deportation strategies. The DOJ’s actions, including prosecuting political adversaries and purportedly concealing critical Epstein-related documents, have sparked allegations of misconduct.

Should House Democrats retake control, they will face the formidable task of unraveling what many perceive as the distortions inflicted upon the Executive Branch during Trump’s tenure. This dismantling of the so-called imperial presidency is not merely a matter of partisan politics; it is about restoring the foundational checks and balances that underpin American democracy.

Under the current Republican majority in both the House and Senate, there has been a conspicuous absence of oversight regarding the Executive Branch’s actions. This lack of checks raises a fundamental concern about the erosion of legislative authority.

On a recent episode of MSNBC’s The Weekend, Rep. Jamie Raskin emphasized the necessity for Democrats to reestablish Congressional authority by winning back the majority. He remarked:

“Mike Johnson and Thune have shown no inclination to defend Congress as a vital branch of government, which is precisely what the framers of the Constitution envisioned.”

“They did not predict a landscape dominated by political parties carving up governmental power. Their expectation was that members of Congress would serve as the legislative voice of the people against an overreaching president. Yet, that expectation has not materialized. We must reclaim Congress. In the meantime, we are engaged in extensive litigation to halt this reign of lawlessness and to protect our core institutions and constitutional values.”

Raskin’s assertion underscores a crucial point: restoring Congressional authority would effectively curtail the expansive powers of the Trump-era presidency. Additionally, he hinted at what Democratic priorities might look like if they regain the majority.
