Apple TV’s “Long Island Compromise” No Longer in Development

After much anticipation, it has been revealed that the series adaptation of Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s novel, “Long Island Compromise,” is no longer in development at Apple TV. Sources close to the project have confirmed to Variety that the show will now be shopped around for a new home. While the series had not yet received a formal series order from Apple, it is not uncommon for projects to encounter such obstacles during the development process.

Both Apple TV and representatives for Brodesser-Akner have declined to comment on the current status of the project.

“Long Island Compromise” sparked a Hollywood bidding war even before its publication in July 2024. The novel, which serves as a follow-up to Brodesser-Akner’s bestselling debut, “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” garnered significant attention from several studios looking to adapt it for the screen. Brodesser-Akner’s previous work was adapted into a successful miniseries on Hulu in 2022, earning her an Emmy nomination for her screenplay.

The storyline of “Long Island Compromise” revolves around the aftermath of the kidnapping of wealthy businessman Carl Fletcher from his Long Island home. While Carl is returned safely after a week, the trauma of the incident continues to linger within the Fletcher family for nearly four decades. The novel delves into the intricacies of the family’s history and explores themes of tradition, success, fear, love, and unity.

Brodesser-Akner was slated to write the TV adaptation of “Long Island Compromise” and serve as an executive producer alongside industry veterans Richard Plepler, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, and Susannah Grant. Plepler’s Eden Productions had inked an exclusive deal with Apple TV back in 2020, signaling a promising collaboration for the project.
