High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition that can have serious effects on the body. While it is well-known that high blood pressure can lead to thickening of the blood vessels and hardening of the arteries, a recent study conducted by Brazilian researchers has shed light on another consequence of this condition – the hardening of the bronchi in the lungs.

The study, which involved 731 men and women over the age of 60, aimed to investigate the impact of hypertension on lung function. The researchers found that high blood pressure can increase airway resistance and impair respiratory capacity by hardening the bronchi. This process can make it more difficult for air to enter and leave the lungs, ultimately affecting the individual’s ability to breathe properly.

One interesting finding from the study was that individuals who engaged in regular physical activity seemed to be partially protected against the hardening of the bronchi. This highlights the importance of leading an active lifestyle, especially for older individuals with high blood pressure.

To assess lung function, the researchers conducted spirometry tests and used impulse oscillometry, a technique that measures resistance to the movement of air in and out of the lungs. They also evaluated general muscle strength and respiratory muscle strength in the participants.

According to Rodolfo de Paula Vieira, the lead researcher of the study, the findings underscore the importance of assessing respiratory function in patients with high blood pressure. With approximately 1 billion people worldwide affected by hypertension, it is crucial for physicians to refer these patients for tests to evaluate lung function and mechanics, particularly in older individuals.

The study also revealed that physical exercise plays a key role in preventing the hardening of the bronchi due to hypertension. A separate analysis by the researchers, involving 150 older volunteers, showed that a three-month training protocol comprising regular exercise sessions helped mitigate cardiovascular alterations caused by high blood pressure.

In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle to protect against the respiratory effects of high blood pressure. By including physical activity in their daily routine, individuals can potentially reduce the risk of developing lung-related complications associated with hypertension. This research underscores the interconnectedness of heart health and lung function, highlighting the benefits of exercise for overall well-being.
