The Threat of Authoritarianism: How the Trump Administration is Undermining Democracy

As the Trump administration continues to disregard principles of democracy and dismantle the rule of law, the consequences are becoming increasingly apparent. One of the most alarming aspects of this assault is the deliberate dismantling of the federal science apparatus, which has far-reaching implications for the future of our country.

Authoritarian regimes operate with a singular goal: to maintain power at any cost. In order to achieve this, they employ tactics that have been historically used to suppress dissent and consolidate control. By targeting the intellectual class and undermining institutions of knowledge and expertise, authoritarian regimes seek to eliminate any challenges to their authority.

At the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), where I serve as the director of the Center for Science and Democracy, we recognize the rise of authoritarian actions in the United States as one of the greatest threats of our time. Our values of courage, integrity, democracy, and action guide our efforts to combat this assault on democracy and truth.

Monitoring Authoritarian Tactics and Upholding Democratic Values

Political scientists and historians have extensively documented the tactics employed by authoritarian regimes throughout history. These tactics are insidious and erode democratic norms over time. At UCS, we are actively monitoring these authoritarian tactics and working to uphold democracy, science, and truth in the face of this crisis.

Key Authoritarian Tactics and Implications

Control information and suppress dissent

One of the primary tactics of authoritarian regimes is to control the flow of information and suppress dissent. The Trump administration has targeted scientists and experts who speak out against their agenda, promoted misinformation, and undermined the credibility of scientific research.

At UCS, we are documenting these attacks on science and standing up for the truth in the face of disinformation and censorship.

Curtail civil rights

Authoritarian regimes seek to curtail civil rights such as freedom of speech and assembly in order to suppress dissent and opposition. The Trump administration has targeted journalists, activists, and civil society organizations, eroding the foundations of democracy.

We must remain vigilant in defending our civil rights and freedoms in the face of authoritarian overreach.

Centralize power, eliminate checks and balances

By consolidating power and undermining checks and balances, authoritarian regimes seek to entrench their control over the government. The Trump administration has taken steps to weaken oversight mechanisms and undermine the independence of government institutions.

We must push back against efforts to centralize power and hold the administration accountable for its actions.

Disregard the rule of law

Respect for the rule of law is a cornerstone of democracy, but authoritarian regimes often flout legal norms and disregard court decisions. The Trump administration has repeatedly ignored legal requirements and defied judicial orders, undermining the foundations of our legal system.

We must demand accountability and adherence to the rule of law from our elected officials.

Divide the country between “us” and “them”

Authoritarian regimes thrive on division and polarization, creating a false narrative of “us” versus “them” to consolidate power. The Trump administration has stoked fear and hatred towards marginalized communities, further deepening societal divisions.

We must reject hate and division, and work towards unity and understanding in our communities.

Target and discriminate against vulnerable communities

Authoritarian regimes often target and discriminate against vulnerable communities to sow division and maintain power. The Trump administration has pursued policies that undermine the rights and protections of marginalized groups, perpetuating inequality and injustice.

We must stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities and fight against discrimination and oppression.

Undermine free and fair elections

Authoritarian regimes undermine democratic processes and manipulate elections to maintain power. The Trump administration has sought to undermine confidence in the electoral system, suppress voter turnout, and tilt the playing field in their favor.

We must protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that every voice is heard in our democracy.

Knowledge is Power: The Path to Resistance

As we confront the threat of authoritarianism, it is essential to recognize the tactics being used and stand up for democracy, science, and truth. By sharing knowledge, building solidarity, and resisting authoritarian overreach, we can protect the values that are fundamental to our democracy.
