Students in the region will soon have the opportunity to earn a University of Otago degree right in Queenstown, the top recreation destination.

Starting in 2027, Queenstown Resort College (QRC) will offer a new bachelor of entrepreneurship (BEntr) programme. This programme will allow QRC level 6 diploma graduates to seamlessly transition into the degree programme, completing the remaining coursework over three additional semesters at the college’s Queenstown campus.

This marks the first time that a University of Otago qualification can be obtained through QRC.

Prof Maree Thyne, the pro-vice-chancellor commerce at the University of Otago, emphasized the university’s dedication to the region through this new entrepreneurship programme.

“This collaboration with QRC not only solidifies our longstanding partnership but also brings a unique Otago offering to Queenstown,” said Prof Thyne.

Students enrolled in the programme will have the flexibility to stay in Queenstown, where many already work, and continue with their current employment and internship opportunities.

Charlie Phillips, CEO of QRC, highlighted the significance of having a complete degree pathway available in Queenstown.

“The University of Otago brand carries a lot of weight, and having this opportunity in Queenstown elevates the region as a serious study destination,” Mr Phillips stated.

The late Sir Eion Edgar, QRC’s founding chairman and former Otago University chancellor, had always envisioned the university having a presence in the district, according to Mr Phillips.

“This partnership with QRC brings that vision to life,” he added.

Prof Thyne, also the dean of the Otago Business School, described the BEntr programme as a “unique offering” that is gaining recognition among schools and businesses.

She believes that the programme’s alignment with the innovative culture of Queenstown will foster growth and development in the community.

According to the university’s website, the BEntr programme is designed to empower students to make a positive impact by creating innovative products, services, and ideas.

“Entrepreneurship goes beyond startups. It’s about fostering entrepreneurial thinking in all types of organizations, including existing businesses, non-profits, and communities,” the course info stated.

Last year, the University of Otago announced plans to establish a permanent presence in Queenstown, focusing on technology and innovation.

Prof Thyne views the delivery of the BEntr programme in Queenstown as a key component of the university’s strategy for the region.
