Hulu’s Onyx Collective has greenlit a pilot for a series adaptation of the popular “Southern Bastards” graphic novels, according to a report from Variety. The original comics were created by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, who will serve as executive producers on the project. The teleplay for the pilot was written by Bill Dubuque, who will also executive produce alongside Nia DaCosta, who shares a co-story credit. DaCosta will also direct the pilot. Matt Olmstead has been tapped as the showrunner and executive producer for the series, with Layne Eskridge, Proximity Media, and Gabriel Nadig also serving as executive producers. The series is being produced in association with Fifth Season.

The premise of the show follows a determined military veteran as she ventures into Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. What she discovers is a dangerous underworld of organized crime led by the most successful high school football coach in the South.

Originally released between 2014 and 2018, “Southern Bastards” has garnered critical acclaim and accolades, including the Harvey Award for best new series in 2015 and multiple Eisner Awards in 2016.

Bill Dubuque, known for his work on the Emmy-winning series “Ozark,” is handling the script for the pilot. Nia DaCosta, who has directed episodes of “Top Boy” and notable films like “The Marvels” and “The Candyman,” will be directing the pilot as well.

Matt Olmstead, known for creating shows like “Chicago Med” and “Chicago PD,” will bring his expertise as the showrunner for “Southern Bastards.”

The project marks the second TV directing gig for Nia DaCosta, who has made a name for herself in the film industry with projects like “Little Woods” and the upcoming “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.”
