Rep. Tom Tiffany Announces Bid for Wisconsin Governorship in 2026

In a move that adds a significant name to an already bustling Republican roster, Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) has declared his intention to run for governor of Wisconsin in the upcoming 2026 elections. Tiffany made his announcement on social media platform X, vowing to “make Wisconsin a shining star in America again.”

“I see where we are headed and I know we can do better,” he stated in a video posted online. “You know we can do better.” This assertion, while echoing a common political refrain, raises questions about the specific changes he envisions for the state.

Tiffany’s entry into the race positions him as the most prominent Republican candidate thus far, joining a field that already includes former Navy SEAL and businessperson Bill Berrien, along with Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann. The competition is heating up as several Democratic contenders have also thrown their hats into the ring. These include state Rep. Francesca Hong, state Sen. Kelda Roys, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez. Interestingly, incumbent Governor Tony Evers has yet to endorse any candidate in the race to succeed him.

Governor Evers, a Democrat, announced his retirement in July, paving the way for an open race for the first time in 16 years. This shift represents a unique opportunity for both parties to reshape Wisconsin’s political landscape.

Tiffany, who currently represents a segment of northern Wisconsin, has positioned himself as a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, often highlighting Trump’s budget policies during town halls and aligning closely with the former president’s agenda. His bid for higher office will vacate his House seat, which is anticipated to remain firmly in Republican hands.

In his announcement video, Tiffany lamented that under Democratic leadership, the American dream is “slipping away.” He pointed to factory closures and declining educational outcomes as evidence of this decline. His campaign platform includes key promises such as freezing property taxes, safeguarding farmland from foreign interests, particularly “communist China,” and upholding “Wisconsin values.”

“Common sense will win,” Tiffany proclaimed in his video, cautioning against the perceived chaos of neighboring states, asserting, “We cannot let Minnesota’s madness and Illinois’ insanity take over here in Wisconsin.” This comparison not only evokes a sense of state pride but also reflects a broader strategy of framing the election as a battle for the state’s identity.

As the 2026 election cycle unfolds, Tiffany’s candidacy will undoubtedly shape the discourse around Wisconsin’s future, and his ability to resonate with voters will be critical in determining the direction of the state.
