Trump’s Call to Indiana Lawmakers: A Push for Mid-Cycle Redistricting

In a move that has raised eyebrows and perhaps a few hackles, President Donald Trump dialed into a private meeting of Indiana’s Senate Republican caucus on Friday. His mission? To persuade hesitant lawmakers to consider mid-cycle redistricting. Two sources familiar with the call, speaking under the veil of anonymity, confirmed the details of this conversation.

This call marks Trump’s first direct outreach to Indiana’s rank-and-file legislators regarding redistricting since an August meeting with state House Speaker Todd Huston and Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray. The timing is notable, coinciding with a heightened national push for redistricting reforms.

Driving this renewed effort is the late MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point Action, which has been rallying support to pressure Indiana lawmakers who are resistant to the idea of mid-cycle map alterations. The specifics of Trump’s call were first reported by The New York Times, highlighting the strategic importance of this issue.

Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.), a staunch ally of the White House, has cautioned that the balance of power in the House of Representatives could hinge on Indiana’s ability to generate more Republican-held congressional districts by revisiting its district maps.

Meanwhile, Indiana Governor Mike Braun is on board with the idea of convening a special legislative session, potentially next month, to address redistricting. However, he appears to be treading lightly, avoiding any heavy-handed tactics to compel the legislature to gather in Indianapolis.

A spokesperson for the White House did not provide immediate comments regarding Trump’s call.

In the backdrop of these political maneuvers, Vice President JD Vance recently made his second visit to the Hoosier State, advocating for the redistricting agenda. Allies of the administration characterized that meeting as productive, albeit not a definitive victory.

Opposition has emerged from the Indiana Conservation Voters, a liberal group focused on environmental issues. They have launched a substantial television ad campaign, reportedly investing six figures, against the mid-cycle redistricting efforts. These ads are set to air during key sporting events this weekend, including games featuring the Colts, Indiana University, and Notre Dame.
