Jay Jones is back in the Democratic fold amid texting scandal

NORFOLK, Virginia — A Surprise Turn for Jay Jones at Democratic Rally

In a twist that could only be described as political theater, Jay Jones, the beleaguered Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, made a surprise entrance at a key Democratic rally on Saturday. This event aimed to invigorate party supporters just days ahead of the critical statewide elections set for Tuesday.

Jones’s appearance comes in the wake of a controversy involving old violent text messages that sparked a national outcry from the GOP, leading to repeated calls for him to withdraw from the race. Nevertheless, he took the stage at the Chartway Arena, opening for a star-studded lineup that included former President Barack Obama, who rallied the crowd in support of Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee for governor.

Interestingly, in his brief address, Jones sidestepped the scandal that had prompted Spanberger to create distance between them. Instead, he zeroed in on his opponent, Jason Miyares, branding the current GOP attorney general as little more than a marionette dancing to Donald Trump’s tune. “Trump has endorsed Jason. … He said ‘Jason will never let us down,’ and what that means is that he’ll never let Donald Trump down,” Jones declared, igniting boos from the crowd at the mere mention of the former president’s name.

Framing Miyares as a “willing enabler” of Trump, Jones painted a vivid picture of the incumbent as a harbinger of chaos for Virginia residents. He claimed that Trump has “illegally fired workers [and] levied tariffs that destroy our regional economies, including the Port of Virginia.” The audience, overwhelmingly Democratic, responded with fervent cheers and applause, as Jones reminded them of his local roots, emphasizing the need for Virginia to send a resounding message to Trump on Election Day.

The Republican camp has been quick to exploit Jones’s controversial text messages — a dark cloud hanging over his campaign. These texts, in which he fantasized about shooting then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, have drawn sharp criticism. Despite the backlash and calls for him to step down from his candidacy, Jones has remained resolute in his pursuit of the attorney general position.

While Spanberger did take a moment to criticize Jones’s text messages, she, like many prominent Democrats both in Virginia and nationally, refrained from asking him to withdraw. Following Jones’s remarks, other speakers including Democratic Rep. Bobby Scott, state Sen. Lamont Bagby, and Sen. Tim Kaine all joined in urging voters to support Jones in the upcoming election.

“I met Jay Jones when he was 11 years old. I have known him for 25 years,” Kaine noted before launching into a critique of Trump’s administration, linking it to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Kaine pointed out that several states have taken legal action against the administration, yet Virginia has not, claiming, “Virginia didn’t participate because Jay’s opponent wouldn’t stand up and say ‘hungry people deserve the money in the contingency fund that was set for them.’ Jay would never do that.”
