Volunteers wearing vibrant pink attire took to the streets of Dunedin on Friday for the annual street appeal organized by Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

The initiative aims to raise funds for breast cancer research, education, and patient support programs, particularly significant during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October where statistics reveal that one in eight women may develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Jo Bond, the Dunedin area co-ordinator, emphasized the importance of fundraising efforts to support the foundation’s various initiatives, stressing the need to constantly work hard to provide essential services for women and advocate for government policies.

Many volunteers participating in the appeal have a personal connection to cancer, either through their own battle or that of a loved one. Their motivation stems from a desire to give back and prevent others from experiencing similar hardships.

Throughout the month, workplaces and organizations are hosting a variety of fundraising events, including pink-themed breakfasts, lunches, and physical challenges to support the cause.

The Pink Ribbon Street Appeal continues on Saturday, with donations accepted from volunteer collectors, online at pinkribbonappeal.co.nz, or by texting the word PINK (2447) to contribute $3 towards the cause.
