For over a month, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has embarked on a quest to weave a narrative around the ongoing government shutdown that bears little resemblance to reality.

On a recent Sunday morning, Johnson repeatedly asserted that Democrats are keen to extend healthcare benefits to individuals residing in the country illegally. This claim is particularly baffling, as Speaker Johnson is certainly aware that non-citizens are legally barred from receiving such benefits.

Now, it seems Johnson has exhausted his arsenal of excuses, and the latest twist in the shutdown saga reveals that he is increasingly acting as a shield for former President Donald Trump.

This shift is noteworthy, as it highlights that the fallout from the shutdown—which Johnson has largely downplayed for weeks—is beginning to reflect poorly on the Republican leadership as a whole.

In the current political landscape, the Republican Party’s identity is inextricably linked to Donald Trump. While a handful of GOP officials may attempt to distance themselves, their electoral prospects remain tied to Trump’s continued popularity among Republican voters. This dependency was evident in Johnson’s response to a question posed during an appearance on Fox News Sunday.

When asked about GOP senators hinting at a slight willingness to consider negotiations, Johnson’s response revealed much about the party’s current dynamic.

See Johnson’s answer and view the video below.
