North Carolina State Lawmaker Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Investigation
A North Carolina state lawmaker, Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-Guilford), has resigned from his legislative seat following the announcement of a committee to investigate his alleged sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old. The resignation came after bipartisan leaders, including Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, pressured Brockman to step down.
Brockman was arrested and charged with two counts of statutory sexual offense with a child and taking indecent liberties for an incident involving a 15-year-old. He stated that he needed to focus on his defense in light of the serious allegations against him, making it impossible for him to continue serving his constituents.
Democratic officials in Brockmanâs Guilford County district will select someone to complete his two-year term through the end of 2026. Meanwhile, a bipartisan House committee has been formed to investigate the charges and recommend expulsion if necessary.
Brockman allegedly committed the sexual crimes with the teen in August, with the details being revealed in court records. The district attorney claimed that Brockman tried to track the victim through an app and by calling 911. The lawmaker met the teenager online in May.
With Brockman’s resignation, the House avoids an expulsion process. A court hearing to review Brockmanâs bond amount is scheduled for Monday.
