German drugstore retailer Drogeriemarkt (DM) has recently partnered with the French retail digitalisation company VusionGroup to integrate the EdgeSense digital shelf platform as part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts.
VusionGroup’s EdgeSense system incorporates a range of cutting-edge technologies such as centralised communication, localisation, and connectivity tools. This system is further supported by Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence (AI), all designed to enhance store operations and simplify workflows for staff members.
The collaboration between DM and VusionGroup currently extends to 70 DM outlets, with 20 already utilizing the technology and additional rollouts in the pipeline. The platform is set to assist DM employees in locating products more efficiently during order fulfilment through features like LED shelf indicators (pick-to-light).
Roman Melcher, DM’s chief information officer and DMTECH managing director, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with VusionGroup, emphasizing the focus on close collaboration to explore and develop innovative use cases and digital solutions that accelerate strategic transformation. Melcher stated, “This cooperation enables us to move forward in our digital journey while contributing to innovations that benefit both our teams and our customers.”
Additionally, store staff will have access to detailed product information through digital labels and mobile devices, enabling quicker responses to customer inquiries. Andreas Rössl, VusionGroup’s Group chief technology officer, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting DM’s ambitious digital transformation and the potential for EdgeSense to unlock new efficiencies, improve customer interactions, and drive measurable operational improvements.
DM, with over 93,000 employees across 4,200 stores in 14 European countries, generated âŹ19.19bn ($22.11bn) in revenue for the 2024â2025 financial year. On the other hand, VusionGroup collaborates with 350 retail groups globally, spanning Europe, Asia, and North America.
In a similar move, in October 2025, British supermarket chain Morrisons partnered with VusionGroup to implement electronic shelf labels (ESLs) across its 497 supermarkets, becoming the first large UK supermarket chain to introduce this technology across its entire store network. VusionGroup is set to deploy 10.8 million smart electronic shelf labels at Morrisons outlets.
