Are you looking to maximize your savings and earn more on your money? One way to do so is by investing in a certificate of deposit (CD). By locking in a high CD rate today, you can watch your balance grow over time. However, with rates varying widely across financial institutions, it’s essential to shop around and ensure you’re getting the best offer available.

Historically, longer-term CDs offered higher interest rates than shorter-term CDs as banks incentivized savers to keep their money on deposit for longer periods. In today’s economic climate, this trend has reversed, with shorter-term CDs now offering more competitive rates.

As of November 2, 2025, the highest CD rate stands at 4.1% APY. This rate is offered by Marcus by Goldman Sachs on its 14-month CD, Sallie Mae on its 15-month CD, and Barclays on its 6-month CD.

The amount of interest you can earn from a CD is determined by the annual percentage rate (APY), which considers the base interest rate and how often interest compounds. For example, investing $1,000 in a one-year CD with 1.7% APY and monthly compounding would yield a balance of $1,017.13 at the end of the year, including $17.13 in interest.

Opting for a one-year CD with a 4% APY instead would grow your balance to $1,040.74, with $40.74 in interest accrued over the same period. The more you deposit in a CD, the more you stand to earn. For instance, a $10,000 investment in a one-year CD at 4% APY would yield a total balance of $10,407.42, including $407.42 in interest.

When selecting a CD, the interest rate is crucial, but it’s not the only factor to consider. Different types of CDs offer varying benefits, such as bump-up CDs that allow for rate adjustments, no-penalty CDs that enable early withdrawals, jumbo CDs that require higher minimum deposits for potentially higher rates, and brokered CDs purchased through a brokerage with potentially higher rates or terms but more risk.

By exploring the various CD options and comparing rates, you can make an informed decision to maximize your savings and watch your balance grow over time. Start by researching the best CD rates available and find the right option to suit your financial goals.
