Prostate health is a topic that many men find difficult to discuss, with a recent survey from Orlando Health revealing that 38% of men would rather face stressful situations like sitting in traffic or watching their team lose than talk about their prostate health. This reluctance to address a common health issue often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment for conditions such as an enlarged prostate.

Dr. Jay Amin, a urologist at Orlando Health, explains that as men age, their prostates tend to enlarge, causing symptoms like urinary frequency, urgency, and difficulty urinating. Despite these symptoms impacting their quality of life, many men are hesitant to seek medical help. However, Dr. Amin emphasizes the importance of discussing urinary concerns with a doctor, as prostate enlargement affects a significant percentage of men and can be effectively treated.

One minimally invasive treatment option for an enlarged prostate is the HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) procedure. This procedure is performed through the urethra, eliminating the need for external cuts and minimizing post-operative pain. Patients typically experience relief from urinary symptoms with a low likelihood of needing additional treatments in the future.

Marathon runner Chris Golden is one success story of the HoLEP procedure, as he saw a significant improvement in his urinary symptoms following the treatment. After struggling with urinary issues that impacted his daily routine, Chris underwent the procedure and was able to resume his normal activities without urgency.

Dr. Amin encourages men of all ages to address their urinary concerns with a healthcare provider, as improved quality of life after an enlarged prostate is achievable. By seeking medical help and exploring treatment options like HoLEP, men can regain control over their urinary health and enjoy a better overall quality of life.

In conclusion, discussing prostate health is essential for men’s overall well-being, and seeking medical help for urinary symptoms can lead to effective treatment and improved quality of life. By breaking the taboo around discussing prostate health, men can take proactive steps towards maintaining their health and well-being.
