The STAT Summit recently took place, and attendees were treated to a breathtaking view of Boston as the almost-supermoon rose in the sky. The event brought together healthcare professionals, journalists, and researchers to discuss important topics in the field.

One of the highlights of the summit was a session with Atul Gawande, who spoke about the importance of understanding people’s priorities as life expectancies increase. He quoted a line from his book ‘Being Mortal’ and emphasized the need to focus on living a good life to the very end. The summit also featured doctors who shared their experiences with the moral injury of UnitedHealth Group’s Optum taking over their practices.

Another key topic at the summit was the impact of biased algorithms on patient care. Usha Lee McFarling and Katie Palmer’s series on Embedded Bias highlighted the challenges of disentangling race from algorithms. One patient shared their story of waiting four extra years for a kidney transplant due to the race factor in one of these algorithms.

The summit also showcased the work of young healthcare professionals, including Alex Chern, who is exploring the connection between music, hearing loss, and cognitive decline. Researchers at the summit discussed the concept of the exposome, which includes all the chemicals a person is exposed to in their environment.

In addition, the summit addressed the diversity within the Asian American community in healthcare. A study published in JAMA Network Open revealed disparities among different Asian American populations in healthcare roles. The overarching category of Asian American was found to mask inequities rooted in historical injustices.

The summit also covered a range of other topics, from the future of Medicare to the impact of legal marijuana on public health. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts and learn about the latest developments in the healthcare industry.

Overall, the STAT Summit provided a platform for thought-provoking discussions and insights into the future of healthcare. Attendees left with a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry and a renewed sense of purpose in their work.
