Dick Cheney Breaks Ranks with Republican Party, Denounces Trump
In his later years, Dick Cheney, a lifelong Republican, made a bold move by breaking ranks with his party and coming down hard against Donald Trump during his second presidential run – despite initially supporting him in 2016.
Cheney’s stance shifted dramatically after Trump refused to accept defeat in the 2020 election, ultimately leading to the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6. Cheney, known for his strong convictions, could not stay silent.
“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney boldly stated in a campaign ad for his daughter, Liz, who also stood firm against Trump’s attempts to overturn the election results.
He continued, “He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big. I know it. He knows it, and deep down, I think most Republicans know.”
When Trump ran against Kamala Harris in 2024, Cheney took a drastic step by turning his back on the Republican party and throwing his support behind Harris. Cheney explained that his decision was based on his duty to prioritize country over partisanship and defend the Constitution.
He firmly stated, “Trump can never be trusted with power again. It is crucial to put an end to his dangerous influence and protect the integrity of our democracy.”
