Trump Links Shutdown to GOP Losses, Calls for Filibuster Elimination

President Donald Trump, during a breakfast meeting with Senate Republicans on Wednesday, attributed the recent government shutdown as a significant factor in the Democratic victories seen in the prior night’s elections. He urged his party to abolish the Senate filibuster to facilitate the quick restoration of federal funding.

“According to the pollsters, the shutdown negatively impacted the Republicans,” Trump remarked. “Last night’s outcomes were unexpected, especially in traditionally Democratic strongholds. I don’t think it was beneficial for Republicans—or anyone for that matter. It was indeed an enlightening evening.”

Trump pointed to external polling that suggested the absence of his name on the ballot led to diminished enthusiasm among his base, the MAGA supporters. “I can’t verify that claim, but I appreciate the acknowledgment,” he noted.

Leveraging his analysis of the election results, Trump pushed for the elimination of the Senate filibuster to promptly reopen the government and advance their agenda, which includes instituting a national voter ID requirement. He did concede that such a move is unlikely, given that many Senate Republicans are opposed, but he cautioned that Democrats would likely take this step when they regain power.

“It’s possible you won’t agree to this, and I respect your decisions,” he stated. “You’re intelligent individuals. However, I believe it would be a grave error—a tragic mistake, in fact.”

As of Wednesday, the shutdown reached its longest stretch in U.S. history, eclipsing the previous 35-day shutdown that occurred during Trump’s first term in 2019. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain entrenched in a standoff.

Democrats achieved notable victories in gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as a high-profile mayoral race in New York City, where Trump had endorsed two of the losing candidates. This electoral success complicates Trump’s newfound urgency to bring the shutdown to a swift conclusion, particularly as it intensifies pressure on Democratic senators who are contemplating an end to the record-breaking shutdown while seeking an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies.

“Republicans aren’t the ones demanding anything, so they face a choice: alter the rules or assist Democrats in finding an exit strategy,” explained Liam Donovan, a seasoned GOP strategist, to POLITICO. “The results from last night could allow Democrats to declare victory and resolve this on their own terms, but achieving that success complicates any resolution.”

Virginia counties housing large populations of federal workers shifted their support towards Democrats. In a CNN exit poll from Virginia, over 20% of voters indicated that someone in their household was a federal worker or contractor; among that group, 63% supported Democrat Abigail Spanberger.

Progressive advocacy organizations, Democratic strategists, and several Senate hopefuls within the party quickly seized on these results as a motivator for senators to hold firm.

“It would be nonsensical for congressional Democrats to capitulate after voters expressed their discontent with Trump and the economic hardships he has inflicted on Americans. Trump should respect the public sentiment and back down,” said Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, on Tuesday night.

A Senate Democratic aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss caucus strategies, stated that “it’s difficult for anyone to argue that the voters are saying ‘please give in to Trump ASAP.’ The pressure will be immense for moderates to maintain their stance.”

“This should send a shiver down the spines of congressional Republicans and compel them to engage in negotiations if they wish to alter the political landscape,” remarked Democratic strategist Jared Leopold.
