The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has taken a significant step forward by forming an advisory board consisting of a star-studded lineup of investors from various NWSL teams. This initiative, led by NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman, aims to explore new business opportunities and expand the league’s reach across the United States, with 16 clubs spanning from San Diego to Boston.
The advisory board includes a remarkable group of individuals, each affiliated with a specific NWSL team. Some notable members of the board are Chris Paul and Julie Foudy from Angel City FC, Brandi Chastain and Sabrina Ionescu from Bay FC, Elizabeth Banks and Aly Raisman from Boston Legacy FC, Jordan Angeli from Denver Summit FC, Brittany Mahomes from Kansas City Current, Sue Bird and Eli Manning from Gotham FC, Lauren Holiday from North Carolina Courage, Grant Hill and Tamia Hill from Orlando Pride, Joey Harrington and Bryce Young from Portland Thorns FC, Ken Griffey Jr. from Seattle Reign FC, Alex Morgan from San Diego Wave FC, Lindsey Vonn from Utah Royals FC, Dominique Dawes from Washington Spirit, and Magic Johnson from Washington Spirit.
Berman expressed her excitement about the powerhouse lineup of investors on the advisory board, emphasizing the valuable experience and influence they bring to the table. The goal is not just to build a league, but to create a movement that redefines entertainment and sets new standards in sports.
Since its inception in 2012, the NWSL has made significant strides in the world of women’s soccer, with the season now running from March to November. The league has seen increased investment, attendance, and TV viewership, aligning with the broader trend of growth in women’s sports globally. Berman hopes that the collective expertise of the advisory board members will drive business development and provide other benefits for the league.
The plan is for the advisory board to meet twice a year, engaging with team owners, staff, and players to address common challenges and share information. The league has partnered with Boardroom, led by NBA star Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, to organize the inaugural summit in the spring of the following year.
The NWSL is counting on the star power and influence of its board members to break down barriers and open doors for women’s sports. Prominent male athletes on the board, such as Eli Manning, also send a strong message to corporate America and Madison Avenue about the league’s potential and impact.
As the NWSL continues to grow and evolve, the advisory board members are committed to shaping the future of women’s soccer. Alex Morgan, an Olympic gold medalist and World Cup winner, who recently retired after a successful 15-year career, expressed her pride in being part of the board and contributing to the league’s next chapter.
With a shared vision for the future of women’s soccer, the advisory board members are ready to lead the charge and make a lasting impact on the sport. The NWSL is set to inspire communities, empower women, and set new standards of excellence both on and off the field.
