Billionaire Hedge Fund Manager Ken Griffin Criticizes Chicago as a “Failed City-State”

During a business conference in Miami, billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin once again took aim at Chicago, referring to it as “a failed city-state.” Griffin, who announced the relocation of his Citadel Securities headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022, made these remarks at the American Business Forum. Citadel manages assets exceeding $65 billion.

Griffin expressed his frustrations with Chicago, stating that conversations in the city often revolved around crime, cronyism, and failed policies. He contrasted this with Miami, where discussions focused on the future and optimism. He emphasized the importance of optimism for entrepreneurs and praised the enthusiasm and excitement he found in Miami.

Reflecting on his time in Chicago, Griffin recalled a concerning incident where he counted “25 bullet holes” in front of his former home. He frequently criticized Chicago’s crime and political climate, citing safety concerns for employees and their families as a key factor in the decision to move headquarters to Florida.

Miami vs. Chicago Crime Statistics

Comparing crime rates between Miami and Chicago, Miami Police Department data reported 24 murders through October, adjusted for population, Miami’s per capita homicide rate would equate to approximately 136 murders in Chicago. However, Chicago recorded 360 murders during the same period, highlighting a significant disparity in violent crime rates between the two cities.

Furthermore, Miami reported 320 robberies through October, whereas Chicago logged 5,050 cases, indicating a substantial difference in robbery incidents. Despite these statistics, Chicago has seen a 47% decrease in major crime reports compared to 2022, the year Griffin announced Citadel’s move from the city.
