The Ongoing Fight for Climate Action: A Personal Reflection
Back in December 2015, a pivotal moment occurred in my life when my husband left me and our two-day-old son in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to attend the COP21 climate conference in Paris. As scientists dedicated to addressing the climate crisis, we understood the importance of his presence at this global gathering, knowing that the decisions made there would impact our son’s future and the planet as a whole.
While my husband was in Paris, I closely followed the news from the conference, eagerly anticipating the announcement of the historic Paris Agreement. This groundbreaking commitment to reduce global warming emissions gave me hope for a better future for my family and future generations.
Over the years that followed, I transitioned into public service, working on climate research initiatives and celebrating legislative victories that aimed to further climate action. The passage of laws like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act marked significant progress towards meeting the goals set out in the Paris Agreement.
Fast forward to present day, and the fight for climate action is more crucial than ever. With global emissions on the rise and the looming threat of surpassing the 1.5 degrees Celsius warming limit, the need for urgent action is evident. Despite the challenges posed by certain administrations, the commitment to climate progress remains unwavering.
As my colleagues head to COP30 in Belém, Brazil, without an official US government delegation, the urgency of the situation is palpable. The words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres echo in my mind, highlighting the daunting task ahead of us to curb global warming.
Despite the setbacks and obstacles, the fight for climate action continues. We are driven by a sense of duty to protect vulnerable communities and future generations from the devastating effects of climate change. The power of collective action and advocacy gives us hope that a better world is possible.
As I prepare to share this journey with my children and future generations, I am reminded of the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. The future of our planet and all its inhabitants depends on our unwavering commitment to climate action.
My NICU baby, now a nine-year-old with a vision for a better world, serves as a constant reminder of why we must continue the fight for climate action. Their future is worth every effort we put into creating a sustainable and equitable world for all.
