A 21-year-old man from Portage Park is facing charges for allegedly firing a gun through his apartment ceiling Thursday night, grazing his upstairs neighbor, Chicago police said.

According to reports, officers received a call around 9:49 p.m. about shots fired inside a residential building on the 4600 block of West Patterson Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a 22-year-old man with a graze wound to the chest on the second floor. The victim directed the officers to a hole in the floor, indicating where the bullet had entered from the unit below.

Police proceeded to the apartment beneath the victim’s and apprehended the 21-year-old suspect. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The injured man, however, declined to go to the hospital for medical treatment.

Charges against the downstairs neighbor are currently pending as the investigation continues. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless firearm use and the importance of responsible gun ownership.

It is crucial for residents to prioritize safety and exercise caution when handling firearms to prevent such incidents from occurring. Authorities urge individuals to report any suspicious or dangerous behavior to law enforcement to ensure the well-being of the community.

The Chicago Police Department is actively working to address gun violence and enhance public safety measures to protect residents from harm. Cooperation from the community is essential in promoting a secure environment for all individuals.

As the situation unfolds, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any concerning activity to the authorities promptly. By working together, we can strive to create a safer and more peaceful neighborhood for everyone.
