The highly anticipated Sotheby’s auction is set to take place this month, featuring a wide array of multimillion-dollar artworks, including Maurizio Cattelan’s iconic gold toilet, “America”. This fully functional 18-karat gold toilet, weighing 223 pounds, is expected to fetch around $10 million, making it a valuable piece in the art world.

The auction will be held at Sotheby’s new headquarters in the historic Breuer Building on Madison Avenue. The building, which opens to the public on November 8, features a mirrored room where the gold toilet is displayed behind a rope barrier. Despite its functionality, visitors are not allowed to use the toilet, as it is strictly for viewing purposes.

Sotheby’s CEO, Charles Stewart, expressed excitement about the new headquarters, stating that it provides an opportunity to showcase the world’s most valuable artworks in a museum-like setting. The goal is to make fine art and luxury objects more accessible to a wider audience.

The art market has been experiencing volatility, with sales declining in recent years. However, Madeline Lissner, executive vice president for Sotheby’s global fine art division, believes that the market is beginning to turn around. The acquisition of the Breuer Building is seen as a strategic move to expand Sotheby’s reach and attract more art enthusiasts.

The Breuer Building, purchased from the Whitney Museum in 2023, has undergone significant renovations to accommodate Sotheby’s auction needs. The exhibition space has been enlarged, a new restaurant and sculpture garden have been added, and additional galleries have been created. The building now serves as a hub for showcasing and selling fine art and collectibles.

The upcoming auctions at Sotheby’s will feature a diverse collection of modern and contemporary masterpieces, including works from prominent collectors such as Cindy and Jay Pritzker and Leonard Lauder. Highlights of the auctions include Gustav Klimt’s portrait “Bildnis Elisabeth Lederer” and Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Piles de romans français et roses dans un verre”, among others.

The Breuer Building also houses a selection of luxury items, including Hermes handbags, high-end watches, and exquisite jewelry. These items are displayed in booths next to the main entrance, adding a touch of glamour to the art auction experience.

Overall, the new Sotheby’s headquarters on Madison Avenue promises to be a sophisticated and inviting space for art enthusiasts and collectors alike. The blend of high-end artworks and luxury goods creates a unique shopping experience that is sure to attract a discerning audience.
